FIRST Lego League

This Year's Challenge
What are we doing?
October 2007
Grade 6
By: Morgan V.
The 6th graders this year are participating in the the FIRST LEGO League tournament. Our team name is the P.O.P. (Prince of Peace) Bots #876 and our robot's name is Dr. Pepper. The tournament theme this year is the PowerPuzzle and it is about Alternative Energy. The P.O.P. Bots have to do a research project on renewable energy, build and program a robot, and be able to present their presentation in front of the judges. We are doing this so we can learn how to work together as a team and learn more about renewable energy in a fun way. The mini-tournament will be on 11/10/2007, and the real tournament (the Regional Tournament) will be held for two days, on 12/8/2007 and 12/8/2007, at the University of Cincinnati.
Below is a picture of our robot, Dr. Pepper.

The 6th grade P.O.P. Bots went to the Mini Tournament at the UC College of Applied Science on November 10th and came in 1st place! At a mini tournament teams only compete with their robots on the table, and do not give their presentations. The P.O.P. Bots did a great job and came out with the highest score overall. Way to go P.O.P. Bots!

On November 11th the 5th grade Solar Panthers took their robot to the UC College of Applied Science for the Mini Tournament. They did a very good job and placed 3rd out of 11 teams. They are looking forward to the Regional Tournament in December.
FLL Regional Tournament Dec 8th & 9th
The Prince of Peace Catholic School 5th and 6th grade robotics teams, the P.O.P. Bots and the Solar Panthers, were part of the competition at the FLL Regional Tournament Dec 8th and 9th at the University of Cincinnati and did an excellent job. The Prince of Peace teams were in competition with 38 other teams from the Cincinnati area in 4 separate areas: Teamwork, Technical presentation of the robot, Research Project presentation, and robot performance on the competition table.
The 6th grade P.O.P. Bots got off to a rough start with an initial score on the table of 64 (out of 400) points. They were able to rally and on their second run scored a 225, followed by a 265. In the end they placed 9th on the table overall. Their ability to bounce back and not give up was awesome.
The 5th grade Solar Panthers also did very well. Their high table score was a 300, which put them in 5th place for high scores on the table and they were in the top ten teams for the research project. In addition they won the Team Spirit award for their teamwork and were one of ten teams to receive an invitation to the Ohio state tournament in January. Way to go Solar Panthers!
